The Dog
Dogs Lane is supposed to be haunted by a wicked parson who was turned into a dog for his sins. It is supposed to have been seen very early one morning in 1927 by William Sturman who was walking from the village to work at Lodge Farm. He saw an enormous dog with luminous eyes sitting at the corner of Dogs Lane. When he ran away the dog made no attempt to follow him. A ghost dog was also seen by a cyclist in 1913 near the old Ivy Tower of All Saints. He was riding quickly at night and suddenly saw the dog sitting just in front of him. He expected to be thrown from his bicycle but just before he touched the dog it ran away into the old churchyard.
The Highwayman
The road just beyond the War Memorial is haunted by a Highwayman who crosses the road dragging a chain at chime hours. He is not seen but you hear his chains rattle and see stones move as he drags them along. Legend says he was a highwayman who used to rob people on the road between Beccles and Yarmouth and he was caught and hung in chains.
The Haunted Gate
There is a haunted gate which will not stay shut on the meadows near the old Tithe Barn, sometimes called the Old Chapel because it has a window rather like a church window.
Deadmans Lane and Folly Corner
There is also a lane named Deadmans Lane between Geldeston Road and Folly Corner. A man is said to have starved himself to death in a ditch here. Folly Corner is supposed to be haunted by a coach with headless horses and coachman which comes up the Geldeston Road at midnight, turns round the corner and goes back again.
Winston Hall
Winston Hall is reputed to be haunted. The ghosts are not seen but are often heard. A rustling noise like a stiff silk dress can be heard going along a corridor at the back of the house and at other times heavy footsteps are heard walking about at night, and a voice is heard calling “are you there?” from an old outside door now little used, but if you go to look you will not find anyone there
Wyndale Farm
Wyndale Farm is said to have a secret underground passage leading from a cellar to the river. It can be traced by the hollow sounds when a horse is ridden over it. The entrance can be seen bricked up in the cellar. It is said to be haunted , possibly by smugglers. There was a lot of smuggling done in these parts in the olden days. A road near the farm is called Holloway Road.
